Planning Smooth Transition to SAP Integration Suite

Share

Migrating to SAP Integration Suite requires careful planning and a structured approach.
While the specifics of each project will vary, I believe a well-defined roadmap is crucial for
a successful transition.

Based on my experience, here are key phases to consider when embarking on your SAP Integration Suite migration journey:

1. Defining Target Architecture:

The first step is to define your future integration architecture. This includes determining the appropriate communication patterns (synchronous vs. asynchronous), evaluating the need for API Management to govern and secure your interfaces, assessing whether Event Mesh is required for event-driven scenarios, and identifying any critical on-premise integrations that will necessitate the Edge Integration Cell. This phase also lets you re-engineer and optimize your existing integrations for better performance and maintenance. At this stage, clear architectural guidelines are essential for your team to ensure consistent development and minimize future issues.

2. Preparing SAP Integration Suite Tenant:

Provisioning and configuring your SAP Integration Suite tenant, including setting up the Cloud Connector for hybrid scenarios, requires careful attention. While it’s important to avoid unnecessary delays, ensure that all foundational elements are in place and properly configured before commencing any migration activities.

3. Scenario Assessment:

You must evaluate and prioritize your existing integration scenarios. Consider factors such as complexity, business criticality, and alignment with ongoing and future IT initiatives.
Use standard SAP tools like the Migration Assessment or partner solutions like Figaf to understand your current landscape.

4. Migration Execution:

Based on what you’ve learned from the scenario assessment and your target architecture, create a clear migration strategy. This includes planning the order and grouping of scenarios for migration and go-live. If possible, use migration tools to automate the work and improve efficiency.

5. Parallel Development:

Once your SAP Integration Suite tenant is ready and the target architecture is set, you can start implementing new integration scenarios and use the platform’s capabilities, even while migration is happening. This lets you gain the benefits of SAP Integration Suite sooner.

6. Testing:

From my experience and that of many customers, testing is the most critical phase. If you’re migrating from SAP PI/PO, I strongly recommend using testing tools from partners like Int4 and Figaf, available at no extra cost with your SAP Integration Suite subscription. Thorough testing ensures your migrated integrations are stable and reliable.

7. Successful Go-Live:

If you’ve carefully followed the previous steps, the go-live should be a well-managed transition. Celebrate this milestone!

8. Continuous Development:

The integration world changes constantly, with evolving business needs and new technologies. So, the work doesn’t end with the go-live. Ongoing development, monitoring, and optimization of your integrations are key to ensure they continue to support your business effectively. Solutions like Amphi from Sygeon can offer valuable insights for monitoring and finding potential bottlenecks or issues in your integration processes.
